The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) is putting on its first annual conference and the subjecft is The humanities paradox: more relevant and less visible than ever?. The CFHSS is a federation of scholarly associations across the humanities and social sciences like the Society for Digital Humanities (SDH/SEMI) which is our digital humanities association. They run an annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, but this is something different. It is an annual conference on the humanities and social sciences. From the search for meaning and inspiration in culture, grappling with the realities of globalization and understanding our citizenship and identity in the digital age – the social sciences and humanities are increasingly poised to contribute ideas and responses to the pressing issues of our time. What is the role for the humanities in society? Where can we find examples of the humanities at work in our communities?

The first annual conference Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences will address this fundamental question of where to place the humanities within Canadian society. Featuring world-renowned scholars, the conference is an important opportunity to share ideas and critically discuss the state of the social sciences and humanities in Canada and celebrate the creativity of our community.
