The Year of the Humanities at University of Pittsburgh highlights humanistic thinking across the university and beyond

The University of Pittsburgh is in the midst of celebrating the Year of the Humanities in the University—an initiative designed to highlight the important role that humanistic thinking plays in research and education across the University and beyond. The Year, which was created and supported by Provost Patricia Beeson, has been guided by a committee of faculty members from across the University and supported by matching funds from the Office of the Provost. The amount of funds Provost Beeson has allocated to support the Year—beginning at $100,000 and growing to more than $300,000—has demonstrated a substantial level of institutional enthusiasm and support for the humanities at Pitt.

Electronic Literature Organization to Partner with 4Humanities on Exhibiting Student Contest

4Humanities.org is delighted to announce that the Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) will be its partner in promoting the results of the “Shout Out for the Humanities” student prize contest. With the assistance of students interested in electronic literature, digital humanities, and new media, Dene Grigar (President of ELO) and other members of ELO’s creative digital writing and arts community will work with the contest submissions once judging has occurred to create an innovative digital exhibit. (Contest submissions are made under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license.)

Electronic Literature OrganizationThe exhibit will be showcased at the ELO 2016 conference to be held June 10-12, 2016, at the University of Victoria, Canada, in conjunction with this year’s Digital Humanities Summer institute. It will also be put online and promoted by both 4Humanities and ELO to help get the word out to the public about what students have to say when they “shout out for the humanities.”

One Example of a Shout Out for the Humanities Creativity Workshop

Knowing the Shout Out for the Humanities student contest deadline is fast approaching—March 1, 2016—I led a Creativity Workshop for the UCSB Catalyst literary magazine. The Catalyst is a collective of undergraduate students who produce an incredibly artistic quarterly publication. They are led and organized by one professor and graduate student each year; Brian Donnelly and Jeremy Chow are the respective leaders this year who generously allowed me to lead the workshop during one of their regular meetings.

The following is an example of what a Creativity Workshop can look like, which any workshop hosts are welcome to freely adapt.

Shout Out for the Humanities

Dear Students . . .

The submission deadline (March 1, 2016) for the 4Humanities.org “Shout Out for the Humanities” student prize contest is fast approaching. If you are an undergraduate or graduate student anywhere in the world who values the humanities and think that society should too, please make a submission that tells us why.

How better to advocate for the humanities than to have students tell it in their own words, pictures, videos, songs, online materials, etc.?

We’ll use your submissions to get the news out that society needs a robust, rich mix of fields, disciplines, and values, among which the humanities have a strong role.

Share this post about our contest with friends. Check out our Facebook page and “like” our post on the contest. Follow us on Twitter (@4Hum).

There are separate prizes for undergraduates and graduates. There is a great panel of distinguished judges. We’ll be posting the submissions.
